Researchers use drones to detect potholes, cracks, and other road damage

In a newly published preprint paper, researchers describe an algorithm that automatically maps potholes, cracks, and other types of road damage.

Alicia-Marie Kodis’s insight:
This article discusses how drones have been proposed to be used for nuclear reactor inspection and for checking wind turbines to ensure that they have no damage. It also talks about how the drones can be used to detect road damage ssuch as cracks and potholes. 3D images were used and then a disparity map was created to show the damage that was on the roads. The researchers plan on continuing this project and fine tuning the system that is detecting the damage.
